1. What new study or learning strategy did you acquire from class and/or the online seminars?
I’ve learned the significance of knowing the basic concept of a topic instead of trying to memorize every little fact.
2. What about it was useful? Why?
This habit I’ve acquired not only saves an incredible amount of time and energy that I used to spend studying, but it enables me to actually be able to answer critical thinking questions. This is what’s so useful about knowing general concepts because critical thinking questions are what exams are comprised of in real life.
3. How will you utilize this strategy in the future?
In the future, I plan on continuing to study exactly the way I do now. What this entails is focusing on chapter objectives before getting into the actual chapter and spending time on the activities, questions and examples provided within the chapter. These tools within our textbooks are crafted specifically for helping us build our comprehension of the subjects being introduced and it’s for this reason that I believe they’re essential to gaining a quick and solid understanding of material.
4. How do you think your general education classes will differ from your nursing classes?
I know from firsthand experience just how different nursing courses are from general education courses and the biggest difference I have to say exists between the two is the requirement of critical thinking. I will say, however, that there is critical thinking involved in general education science classes, and it’s my opinion that Liberal Arts classes (English, Math, Sociology, Psychology, etc.) only require basic comprehension skills.
5. Have you used any of these strategies before? What about them worked? What about them did you have to change to fit your needs?
When you finally break into nursing, there’s a big change not only in the material being taught but there’s also a change in your professors’ expectations of how you both absorb and apply the material. Being said, in combination with focusing on general concepts, I also make an effort to familiarize myself with said concepts before going to class. I found that people who are learning material for the first time in lecture are already behind and those that are coming with questions only to clarify their established understanding are the ones who are actually prepared.
