Depressed children show signs of depression, although they may not know they are depressed. Most times, “Depressed children often lack energy and enthusiasm, they become withdrawn, irritable and sulky. They may feel sad, anxious and restless. They may have problems in school, and frequently lose interest in activities they once enjoyed (FDA 2014). Another issue depression causes is alcohol and drugs abuse/disorders. Alcohol and drugs are used as a suppressant to try and cover up what is really the underlying factor, which in this case is depression. Many may feel that being high or intoxicated fixes the problem, when in actuality it doesn’t! Alcohol and drugs only gives your mind and body a temporary fix. When you are high or intoxicated, you do not think about what is going on in the real world. As the suppressants starts to wear off, reality hits! “Individuals with a history of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are more likely to drink, to cope with the traumatic event; early onset of drinking in adolescence, as well as adult AUDs” (National Institute of Health 2012).
