Week 8 Journal Entry
This has been a very informative class.
... [Show More] I have been introduced and reintroduced to periods of the many critical moments in history. It is as though I traveled back in time on many occasions. I had many reservations first coming into this class. Mainly my fear of not knowing anything.
How has this course affected you today in your daily life and/or work?
This course has given me a clear understanding of the topics that are being debated in today's world. Also, I feel more empowered to have conversations on the topics. Many of the topics I found to be interesting. However, the one that stood out the most to me was the period through the Civil War. For example, the impact of the war on nursing and healthcare. I believe, still, in today's society, that healthcare people do not get paid enough. Now with that being said, it is a long way from the forty cents a day that female nurse was paid during the civil war period (History, 2020).
Civil War was a crucial turning point in nursing. Because of the civil war era, we have a clear evidence-base knowledge of healthcare.
What should incoming students be aware of regarding this class?
I would say the amount of reading that this course requires would be something that I would mention. The reading that is required is not only for the paper that one may need to write about, but also to respond to any of the peers that have written on a different topic.
What strategies did you use that they may find useful?
For myself, I took the reading in small pieces. I found this to be helpful especial with assignments that had two different discussions and posts. In addition, I separated the assignments and set aside time to complete them on different days this helps me not feel overwhelmed with reading, research, and posting.
What advice can you provide to help them earn an A?
My advice here would be to focus only on the left column of the "Grading Rubric", do not read the other columns. Also, when I completed an assignment I would review each row of the rubric to ensure I have met all the requirements.
Another strategy that worked for me was a chart or in some cases sticky notes. This helped me to know what I have completed in that discussion post and what was still needing to be followed up on. Again, the weeks that have multiple posts can become confusing therefore, a clear system to remind yourself what is not completed is a must.
Conclusion
For many years I have always thought that I wasn't "into" history. However, I now have a better view of the subject. I am grateful for my professor in pushing the conversation in our post this inspired me to continue to ask more questions and research more.
