After the war, Lincoln had one plan for bringing the rebel states back into the Union; Andrew Johnson another; and the Radical Republican Congress a third. Discuss the aims of each president and explain why and in what ways Congress took control of Reconstruction.
ANSWER
Both North and South believed they would win, the north had a much larger population and thus more soldiers, and with a larger industry more weapons. The north had an advanced transportation system and they believed they were upholding the constitution with their patriotism. The southerner had the confidence and patriotism as well, they believed in a win through destiny and that had overcome the British they could win the war. The South believed they could win with defense and a plan to tire the Northerners, as well has having the British support if necessary due the need for their, the southerners cotton production. (Keene, 2011)
The basic conflict that started the civil war was weather the southern states of the Union had the option to leave. President Lincoln Tried to keep the states back the union through his speech, He wanted the southerners to believe his administration would not bother them about having slaves. Lincoln also sent supplies via ship to fort Sumter to show support, But the ship was attacked, and the war was on. The Union vastly outnumbered the Confederate and defeat them in multiple battles, the south was fast becoming ruined land from the invasions and the economy founded on slavery was falling apart. ("Lincoln," n.p.) Lincoln devolved the 10% plan where if 10 % of the state’s voters took an oath to support emancipation Lincoln would be able to develop a new state government. (Keene 2011) After the assignation of Lincoln, Andrew Johnson took office, being a slaveowner his plan was to offer pardons, amnesty and return of property to southern who vowed to support the Union. (Keene 2011) This was his plan to get the states to rejoin the union. With the Radical Republican party, the goal was to allow the slaves to vote. The Radical Republican party won control.
