ANSWER
In this week’s lesson, the concept of careful nursing developed by Catherine McAuley was introduced. McAuley’s philosophy behind carful nursing is based on ten key concepts including: disinterested love, contagious calmness, creation of a restorative environment, fostering safety and comfort, nursing interventions, health education, participatory-authoritative management, trustworthy collaboration, power from service; and self-care of nurses.
One of the ten concepts of careful nursing is “trustworthy collaboration “. Whether we are speaking of McAuley’s times or our current times, good collaboration between health care practitioners, aids in the efficient, safe and positive care of our patients. According to the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, there are a set number of qualifications nurses must possess; Teamwork and Collaboration is one of them. Through Teamwork and Collaboration, nurses “function effectively within nursing and interdisciplinary teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, shared decision making, team learning, and development” (Massachusetts, 37).
In current day nursing practice, communication and collaboration between all healthcare professionals is imperative. Teamwork and Collaboration is essential to enhanced patient-centered care and safety. Medical professionals from all areas come together day to day to coordinate care for their patients. Drawing from personal experience, every morning, when I go to work, after figuring out my assignment for the day, one of the most important and crucial parts of my day is getting report from the evening nurse. Effective use of the SBAR as a communication tool helps me not only to organize myself but also ensures continuity of care of the patient. Another example are the interdisciplinary meetings that occur during rounds. Together with my Nurse Manager, the Social Worker, Case Manager and other members of our team, we discuss, assess, and coordinate care and discharge planning for our patients. Furthermore, effective teamwork and collaboration with PMDs, dieticians, nutritionists, PCAs, etc. ensure the safe handling of our patient’s care. Another example of collaboration is Evidence Based Practice, by which medical professionals share, or collaborate, their experiences. It is evident ;how practices of the past are still used in current day nursing practice.
