Your Relationship With Selected Nurse
25 points Lisa and I both worked at a long term care facility for ten years. Knowing her for 10 years makes her feel like family because I work with her 5 days a week and 8hours in a day. We both worked on the skilled floor where the patient turnover was very high since they come in for rehabilitation. I was a brand new nurse out of school when I met Lisa and we quickly bonded and became a team.
Why You Selected This Nurse
45 points Lisa shows great compassion in what she does. Using the following Nursing core competencies; Safety, communication, teamwork collaboration, patient centered care, professionalism and leadership, I will justify why I think Lisa is an Ideal nurse that is making history. It is true that in the nursing world, these competencies are the rules that governs us in our everyday practices and it is obligatory that all nurses comply with these competencies. However, we can agree that not all nurses have compassion for the job like others. With that been said, some nurses will use the nursing core competencies to guide their practices while others won’t. Lisa is one of the few that uses these competencies religiously to guide her practice.
Safety: Lisa thrive with patient safety above all things. Making sure medications are not expired, discharge meds sent back to the pharmacy, checking pt. area fruitfully for any safety concerns, making sure pt. fall safety measures is in place the moment she works in, checking patient devices and accessing them for removal etc.
Communication: she communicate any abnormalities with the care team, she also does a fantastic job communicating with patient family about any issues. She does great job communicating with the staff in both patient and nursing related issues.
Teamwork and Collaboration: She communicate with care team and majority of the time, she suggest to them what she thinks is a better way of handling certain situations. She will respond to majority of the codes in the building. Is just something about her, other employee feel safe when she is working. She attends to patient who aren’t assigned to her. She is such a great team player and such a great example to all the staff.
Leadership: very respectful of everyone regardless of their department, show true leadership by holding people accountable and always putting corrective action in place.
Professionalism: very conscious of her environment, respectful of everyone most especially the patients.
Patient- Centered care: Lisa always gives her patient the upper hand in their care and let them make certain decision when it comes their care. She is very good about updating not just the family but also the patients about their care.
Lisa was offered an ADON (Assistant Director of Nursing) position at the facility, she turned down the position. Her rationale was, it was going to take her away from bedside nursing which she really loves. It came a point where patients will bring their loved ones to the facility on one condition that Lisa is their nurse. Lisa always exceed expectation. Initially when I met Lisa, I copied a lot of great things from her, we worked well great, and then I quickly realized that if I try to be like Lisa, working the way she does, I will one day die from exhaustion. I had to step back, copy the great things Lisa is doing then apply it in my own way. I can proudly say, meeting Lisa was the best thing that ever happened to me as a brand new nurse. Been employee of the month several times, employee of the year of the facility several times, as well as nurse of the year in the entire organization of about 5000 employees means she is making history in a very significant way.
