Techniques for credibility Communication styles (tell, sell, etc)
Tell/Sell- Used when you want the audience to learn. Tell is informing or explaining. Sell is persuading or advocating.
Consult/Join - Used when you want to learn from the audience. Consult is conferring/somewhat collaborative. Join is collaborative.
Your audience (primary, key influencers, secondary)
Primary- Those who will actually receive your message directly. When your audience is unknown, find out about their demographics, knowledge and beliefs, preferences. When audience is known keep in mind these as well as their likes and dislikes, typical behavior, preferred level of detail, and tendency to be challenging or withdrawn.
Key Influencers- audience members have more control over the outcome of the communication. Decision makers- make the decision directly. Opinion leaders affect the decision indirectly because of their high credibility or their ability to shape opinion. Gatekeepers have the ability to either expedite or block your message.
Secondary- people who will receive your message indirectly.
Writing in groups (Chapter 2)
Agree on guidelines and tasks and times. Tasks: Setting the strategy, researching, organizing and focusing, drafting, editing, and attending to final details.
Editing for brevity Nonverbal communication - body language & eye contact
Posture (relaxed and upright), body movement (move with purpose), hand and arm gestures (move them naturally), facial expression (natural), and eye contact (make it).
