... [Show More] Grammar Lesson Table: First Conditional
NB: Look at the model provided and make sure you understand what MFP refer to here. See Units 2 and 7. For example, in number 4 in the table below, we do NOT mean 'What is the function of the lesson'!!!
1. What is the target form of the first conditional (both clauses)? (F)
2. What is the model sentence you will elicit to begin your presentation?
3. What are the negative and question
(interrogative) forms of your model sentence? (You might find there is more than one possibility, but you only need to show one negative and one question, then analyse the forms.)
4. What is the function? (M)
5. What do students need to know about the pronunciation, including sentence stress and intonation? (P)
(Think only about how the model sentence would normally be said.)
(If Clause) + (Main Clause) =
(If + Subject + present simple), (Subject + auxiliary (will) + infinitive (future simple))
I will try to generate examples of different model sentences to be used. I will the class what they will do on the weekend if they’re tired after the long week. E.g., “If I am tired, I will stay in bed all weekend.”
Model sentence in negative form: “If I’m not tired, I’ll go play video games.” Form: If + subject + not/does not/ will not + present verb, Subject + will (not) + verb
Model sentence in question form: “If you’re tired, will you stay in bed? Form: If + subject + simple present verb, will + subject + verb?
The first conditional is used to express a statistically probable (not definite) condition and what it may result in, in the future if it comes to be true.
Contractions
Describe to the class how certain words are contracted such as ‘I’ and ‘am’ contracted to ‘I’m’. For ease of reference, the model sentence will not contract these pronouns and auxiliary verbs.
Stress
Stress: Stress is usually pronounced on the forms of verbs, nouns, and adverbs. If I AM TIRED, I will STAY IN BED all weekend.
6. What is the context I will use to introduce the form? (M)
Intonation
Students must be aware of how first conditional language is spoken. This entails raising your voice as the first clause is spoken to indicate there is more context after the initial clause and then lower your voice as speaking out the second clause, bringing the sentence to a close.
Discussing what people do on the weekend, especially if they tired.
