Informative Speech
If you ever had to care for a baby for even a short time you know what is worse than a crying baby? That
... [Show More] would be a crying baby with a dirty diaper! This is something that I am all too familiar with being a babysitter since I was 14 years old. Being the oldest of five siblings, it is something that I can say I have become an expert in. Out of all the pros and cons of baby-sitting, changing dirty diapers surely is the highest of the cons. Today I will speak about how to properly prepare for and change a diaper for a boy and girl that will maximize comfort and ease.
Before beginning the change of any diaper, it is important to first have all of your supplies in hands reach. Toddlers are very sneaky creatures and the last thing you want is to have a tiny little person running around smearing poop everywhere. Hygiene is key, so washing your hands with warm soap and water is the first step in the process. After you have dried them make sure you find a space that is big enough for you, the baby, and your supplies. My recommendations would be a changing table or a bed. Make sure that it is tall enough, the last thing you want to do is strain your back changing a diaper. Even young people get strain! If you are not changing the baby on a changing table that has a changing table mattress then you should use a blanket or dry towel to lay the baby on. Make sure that whatever you lay the baby on is absorbent just in case of an accident during changing. Next you place all of your materials in hand reach around the baby. You will need, a diaper, baby wipes, diaper rash cream, and a dirty diaper disposal bag. I would recommend having a ty for the baby to play with, so they don’t reach for the filthy diaper and also for the added benefit of staying still. Toddlers sure love to flip over mid diaper change! Make sure that after you finish changing the diaper you wash your hands with soap and water and dispose of the dirty diaper.
Changing the diaper might seem like a seamless task, but it is one that contains many steps. There are many areas that can vary depending on the age of the child, the gender, and the degree of skin sensitivity. The first thing you do is lay the baby down and give him or her a toy, this is for distraction of course. Then you unwrap the diaper by pulling the side sticky tabs apart and pull the diaper down taking as much soil with you as possible. This will make wiping easier. Something I learned the hard way, is if you are changing a boy, make sure to place a wipe on their private area to avoid pee in your face. Little boys squirt often and have good aim for your eyes! Grasp the ankles and lift the legs upward wiping from front to back. This is especially important with little girls, wiping front to back prevents infection. Make sure to wipe every crevice, especially with chubby babies, poop lies to hide in many places. I would then use the clean diaper and fan the baby’s skin to dry before applying a light layer of diaper cream to prevent future rashes. Remove the old diaper and wipes and place it in a dirty du=diaper bag and tie. Place a fresh diaper on the baby and close the tabs making sure the diaper is snug but not too tight. Re-dress the baby and throw the dirty diaper bag in the trash. Wash your hands and there you go, you are done. It wasn’t that bad was it?
