Community Action Speech
When I first became a teacher, it was spur of the moment. My friend was in a bind with her daughter
... [Show More] and she needed a replacement immediately. I remember coming into the classroom the first day and thinking how does she do this every day. As a thank you gift the principle gave me mug with a popular quote written by creative Juices Publishing that stated, “I became a teacher for the money and the fame, said no teacher ever” (Creative Juices Publishing, 2020). It is very well known to everyone that teachers do not make a lot of money. They rarely make the money that they deserve for the amount of work they put into their jobs. Educators give up their free time, they put their families on the back burner, they give up luxuries all to work on the current school year and the next school year. Educators impact generations of families and do not nearly even have enough to take care of the payment after the many educational requirements that are required of them. It is not only vital, but it is imperative that teachers get the pay that they deserve. Educators should not have to live in poverty for choosing such a commendable career path.
Many others who are not educators have the big misconception that teachers only teach for three reasons, June, July, and August. However contrary to popular belief summer is planning season, teachers do not get days off. A study conducted by Landrum (2017) asking teachers why do they teach, and vacation was never an answer that occurred. The biggest answer was that involvement in the school system is imperative, because without educators, children who are the future, will have no one to teach them. There will be a generation of uneducated people who them raise uneducated people and create a crippling society of uneducated people. The job of a teacher does not stop when the bell rings at the end of the day. This is where the second job begins of cleaning up the classroom, grading papers, and preparing for the next day. The school systems are losing good teacher due to lack of financial stability. New teachers can barely pay off their student loans with their salary let alone afford rent and personal bills. Teachers are always in a constant state of planning and finding money for necessary classroom needs is always on the planning list. Teachers often suffer burnout fast and move on to more lucrative jobs. Teachers are always judged for asking for the financial amount that they deserve, however no teacher should have a full-time job and still need welfare to survive.
Teachers should be paid more than actors and sports athletes. If all the educators leave, who will be left to teach. Becoming an educator is a calling and one that cannot be done by just anybody. A study conducted by Britton (2016) state that 57% of teachers hold master’s degrees and have completed extensive training and continuing learning educating courses. Often teachers go beyond their masters in order to be the best in their field only to be paid less and valued less than other professions. It can be argued that other professions do require extensive education and long internships and deserve the higher paycheck. This is no different however than educators who go to school for at least 7 years and a year of student teaching only to be paid minimum wage at best. Teachers are not compensated with their educational level and that is detrimental to society.
Overall, educators should be paid more, and their salaries should match their education and level of teaching. It takes more than passion and commitment to create a great teacher. If the pay was raised, then those who stray from the teaching field will be more prone to enter it and pursue their calling of educating others. People often say that children are our future, if there are insufficient educators who will be there to teach them?
