Discussion week 7
It can be said that Chinese medicine views the body as a landscape or a microclimate, or “garden.” Discuss this idea from the perspective of the theory of channels and networks in asian medicine and skin, muscles, bones, nerves etc in western medicine.
Very often, acupuncture concepts such as the location at which needles are applied or the channels described in traditional theory are referred to using the expression ‘point’ or the term ‘meridian’, respectively. Both point and meridian express the idea of arbitrary, fixed locations in space.
Explain all of the above terms.
Do you think these terms can adequately capture what the Chinese were trying to express with the words xue (“hole”) and jing luo (“channels and networks”). Why or why not?
Discussion week 8
Discuss the following concepts:
Many traditional healing systems have a complex blend of natural, spiritual, scientific, and supernatural theories about health and healing. How would you describe this blend of ideas and practices for curanderismo?
Curanderismo has three areas of healing theory and practice: the material level (nivel material), the spiritual level (nivel spiritual), and the mental or psychic level (nivel mental). How do these three areas of practice overlap, or not, with the practice of “modern medicine”?
The most important credentials for curanderos come from community acceptance and the belief that curanderos have a “gift” for healing that is not from formal classes or institutional degrees. How does the difference between the credentials of curanderos and those of physicians and nurses have an impact on their healing practices, and on their acceptance and effectiveness?
Discussion week 9
In this final discussion you have a choice of discussing either not both of the two topics below. Pick one!
Topic one-aromatherapy
Smell can play a role in managing stress, healing, and health. Smell is analyzed in the limbic part of the brain, an area associated with emotions. It is not surprising then that an aroma can affect how we feel. Certain essential oils are well known for this ability. And don't forget, a good deep breath of fresh air can clear the mind and calm the body.
Discuss the concept and theory of aromatherapy including physical processing and manufacture.
Discuss evidence on aromatherapy from the perspective of safety, learned memory, delivery methods/ vehicles.
Discuss the indications and contraindications for aromatherapy, the scope and limitations of practice pertaining to certification, licensure, and risk management of essential oils.
Topic two-herbs
Does natural mean safe?
Discuss the evidence on herbs from the perspective of manufacture, horticulture, safety, quality, learned memory, delivery methods/ vehicles.
Discuss U.S. government and consumer agency oversight of herbs.
Discuss the indications and contraindications for herbal use, the scope and limitations of practice pertaining to certification, licensing of practitioners, and risk management of herbs. [Show Less]
