NR 531 Week 6 Graded Discussion 2: Communication
As the
... [Show More] nurse administrator for SLMC, you must communicate to your team the disappointing news that your organization is discontinuing tuition reimbursement benefits. Discuss how you will communicate this message to your direct reports and to the rest of the organization. Be specific and state your rationale for your communication plan.
ANSWER
Simply defined, communication is a process or act of using body language, sound, or words to convey emotions or thoughts to another person (Fibuch & Robertson, 2019). When communicating within an organization or a group, there are e four significant communication functions, such as motivation, expressing emotions, control, and information (Fibuch & Robertson, 2019). Communication is an essential skill for leaders to possess. The ANA Standard of Professional Performance #9 and the AONE Nurse Executive Competency #1 both include communication as elements of these competencies and performance standards for nurse executives and other leaders (Marquis & Houston, 2017). Having to deliver communication that is intended to be unpopular with employees can be challenging. Communicating that the organization is discontinuing tuition reimbursement to both direct reports and all others in the organization will occur in slightly different ways. Communication can be distributed or delivered in multiple modalities such as non-verbal, verbal or face-to-face, telephone, written, or electronic such as the internet or an organization's intranet. The leader must consider their audience when determining the best communication mode to use. I would deliver this communication in two separate messages, first communication the change with my direct reports and then dispersing the same communication to the rest of the organization. The group of direct reports is smaller and could be a little more informal. I would call a meeting for my direct reports to convey the information. Because this is a much smaller group and a little less formal, the direct reports might feel more inclined to give open and honest feedback. These individuals could help be change agents if my communication of the message is well received, and I listen to their feeling and feedback through two-way communication channels. Going in with the knowledge that this is not a decision point, but information that is flowing downward, we can discuss how they feel and what alternative might be available. This will help with acceptance from this group and empower the group to become engaged and help others in the organization with acceptance of this change. For message delivery to the remaining staff in the organization, there will need to be multiple modes of communication formed and available to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to listen to the messaging. I think scheduling a Town Hall meeting with telephone conferencing abilities that is video recorded for those unavailable to watch at a later time would be my first choice. For a more personal touch, off-shift meetings could also be scheduled to catch evening and night shift staff who frequently feel that they are left out of vital communication. By making them feel included, they may be more accepting and become change agents as well.
