NR 531 Week 6 Graded Discussion 1: Importance of Socialization in Team Building
You recently hired a new member to your SLMC team. During her 6-week orientation, you discovered Kim had excellent clinical skills, but her therapeutic communication skills were inferior compared to the rest of your team. She is now working on her own, and some staff and patient complaints have been reported to you regarding her poor communication skills. As the nurse administrator, discuss your next steps for this situation and your rationale. Outline a plan to review with Kim to re-socialize her to her role and make her feel like a valued part of your team.
ANSWER
Professor and Classmates,
Effective communication is the foundation of all nursing practice. Regardless of the capacity of the nurse, he/she must be able to effectively communicate with their patients, families, peers, and superiors. All new applicants must understand the team atmosphere approach and its importance before they are even hired. Essential communication skills must be developed in order for the nurse to fell apart of the healthcare team and feel as they are contributing to the greater good of the organization (Balzer-Riley & Elsevier, 2017). Crucial steps must be made during orientation to the organization and the floor in which they will be working to help gain compliance once the nurse has completed their training. However, in this case further action is required due to the staff and patient complaints regarding the new nurse’s poor communication skills. During an initial meeting with Kim, as a nurse leaders I would discuss her accomplishments and positive attributes that she has contributed toward her team and patients. Followed by that, I will discuss the need for improvement with her communication. A small informal discussion will take place and view the complaints from the patients to help gain a better understanding of her position of the situation. I would work through the cases with her and discuss alternatives to more effective communication to better prepare her for next time. To finalize everything a list of goals pertaining to her communication will be generate that we both can agree upon. Items will include, if a situation arises that you do not know how to handle then you will seek guidance from your mentor or myself. Another goal perhaps, would be to always be cognizant of any nonverbal indicators she may be portraying to staff and patients. We will revisit this monthly until she feels comfortable enough handling those difficult situations on her own. If any further complaints arise then they will be discussed and further action may have to occur in order for her to grasp its importance.
