-Now that you
... [Show More] have examined the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, why do you think these competencies were selected? Which 2 of the 10 will be most important to your future nursing practice and why?
Answer
These ten competencies were created by a multitude of educators to develop a guideline for education in nursing schools to provide students with the skills that are regularly intertwined in what has become second nature for nurses in the field. The Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies states that “an integrated practice/education competency model will positively impact patient safety and improve patient care.”(pg. 5) Each of these facets on the Core Competencies wheel are broken down into sublets to further explain and can be revamped by the Competency Committee to ensure that they are relevant to an ever changing healthcare system. However, In Leddy & Pepper’s Conceptual Bases of Professional Nursing, they began to discuss that competency and confidence were two required aspects of the nursing profession. They state that “Before competence can be achieved, however, professional nurses must have confidence in their ability to execute the clinical, communication and cognitive skills needed for effective practice.” (pg.5) Be confident that the extended education that we constantly attend through work, and school and continuing education (CEUs) will provide us with the knowledge and skill to do our job correctly.
Evidence-based practice is very influential to the future of nursing practice. It is with evidence based practice that nurses are able to develop policies and procedures that are eventually incorporated into a patient’s care. What appears to be a routine everyday task for a nurse such as the placement of a Foley catheter, following the ACLS algorithm, or administration of medications all have gone through rigorous research trials to become the protocols we follow. Through continuous research, ways to improve these tasks with optimal outcomes for the patient are constant.
Along with evidence-based practice being important, safety is always critical. It has been instilled in us since nursing school. With each and every aspect of care we provide to patients, we develop methods to decrease the risk of harm for the patient and ourselves. For example, moving a confused patient closer to the nursing station, activating bed alarms, or initiating a safety sitter to stay with that patient to prevent further harm or injury are all techniques utilized in our daily practices.
