How is traditional health-related research different from CBPR?
-traditional health-related research may develop new treatments/ways to prevent disease but take years before benefiting the public
-in traditional health-related research, community isn't actively involved in designing projects. When projects run into problems, communities are left w/o info about outcome of research or of findings that can benefit community.
-communities becomes suspicious of researchers--creates distrust, inefficiency, harm)
What does CBPR also do?
-in CBPR, community-based organizations/groups help researchers to recruit subjects
-bring community members to study as partners
-use knowledge of community to understand health problems and design activities to improve healthcare interventions
-connect community members directly with how research is done and what comes out of it
-provide immediate benefits from the results of the research to the community that participated in the study
What are some priorities that need to be adopted to improve participation by CBOs in CBPR?
-combat community mistrust of research
-reverse underrepresentation of ppl of color and those from low-income background in health profession and research
-pay increased attention to resource sharing between universities and the communities
-ensure that the entire community, not just CBOs, is represented.
Community members also get word out about research and promote the use of research findings, which can improve the quality of life and healthcare in communities by putting new knowledge in the hands of those who need to make changes
