There are three main leadership theories that I’ve learned over the course of my
schooling at
... [Show More] Western Governors University, and I’ve been able to adapt to them and implement
them into my managerial role at my current job. The first of these theories is transformational
leadership. As an operational and people leader I often find that I’m transforming to the
environmental changes around me, as well as managing up and showing passion regarding
those changes. My focus as a transformational leader is leading, developing and setting my
employees up for success. As a passionate leader, I’m able to motivate my employees and make
interpersonal connections so we can share one vision and grow together as a team.
The second theory that’s necessary to adapt to in a leadership role, in my opinion, is
transactional leadership. Transactional leadership allows me to guide and motivate employees
towards a shared goal, which benefits the organization as well as our team. It’s not always a
win-win situation though, as transactional leadership requires a need to reward and discipline
employees when necessary, based on their performance. If an employee is performing
successfully, they are rewarded. If an employee is not performing successfully, they are
disciplined, typically in the form of a verbal or written corrective action. Both rewarding and
disciplining are necessary in the growth of an employee.
Lastly, the third theory I’ve found to be necessary in leadership is situational leadership.
Situational leadership allows us to “style flex” and adapt to our situation we’re leading or
employees we’re supporting. Such as, if there is a goal that my team is working towards, I can
incentivize them with a reward if the goal is met. I have determined that can be successful,
however I don’t believe it can be a permanent style of leadership as it may become expectant

from employees causing them to only perform and work towards achieving a goal if they are
rewarded.
A1a. Succession in my career with leadership theories
The leadership theories: transformational, transactional and situational will assist in
helping me lead my four diverse teams of employees in my manager role. As an operational
leader, I have goals to set and achieve amongst my teams, therefore I’m able to take concepts
and skills from each of the theories to lead my teams and achieve our department goals. I’m
able to remain flexible in my leading style depending on which team I’m supporting, as well as
the employee I’m working with. I’m able to help develop staff and support them in achieving
their personal goals, to assist them in moving towards a leadership position within the
organization. By assisting employees in developing and moving towards their personal goals,
they will be satisfied in their work, and we can retain successful employees within the
organization. By understanding and using skills from the various leadership theories, I’m able to
adapt to various scenarios that will come up in my managerial role.
A2. Three SMART Goals
The first goal I’d like to achieve is completing my bachelor’s in healthcare management.
I’ve been working on this degree since April 2018, and I’d like to finish and graduate in May
2021. At this time, I only have three courses left to complete before I can graduate. My
bachelor’s degree is required to advance in my career, which is more motivating as it will also
come with a pay increase.
A second goal I’d like to achieve to help me grow and develop in my personal career
would be to expand on my team’s Price Transparency initiative and create additional shoppable

service templates for patients to create estimates for outpatient ambulatory services. This is a
new initiative as of January 2021, which I operated the build on, and I’d like to expand by
creating 100 more estimates before December 2021. This is doable as my team created 1200
templates in 6 months.
The last goal I’d like to set and achieve in my leadership development is standing up a
“specialty authorization” team within my healthcare organization, which will be responsible for
doing insurance prior-authorizations for children’s and cancer services. I’m currently working
with a build analyst to discuss what this team will look like and what work will be encompassed.
This work could be implemented immediately, but to set a reasonable goal I’d like to stand the
team up by August 2021. It will require hiring a supervisor, three new full-time employees, and
training of all staff.
