HR’s role in impacting career development of employees is to strategically make employee knowledgeable, and link that knowledge to organizational goals and objectives. Training helps organizations leverage knowledge, and therefore enables them to be more competitive; training can also have a positive effect on an organization’s rate of employee retention (Youssef, 2012). HRM assesses training needs and develops training plans within organizations. The purpose of strategic HRM is to help an organization achieve its goals and objectives through people; therefore training and development should help improve organizational competencies and performance (Youssef, 2012). HR prepares training for new employees such as orientation that help the employees adapt to the new organization. Orientation helps new employees reach desired performance levels sooner and gives them a better idea of what the organization expects of them (Youssef, 2012). Training programs can be evaluated on their effectiveness by different methods. There are three approaches to determining who and when to evaluate; they are post-measurement, pre-/post measurement, and pre-/post measurement with a controlled group. Post-measurement assessment, the effectiveness of training is measured afterward by verifying that trainees’ performance will now meet expectations. Pre-/post measurement tests trainees both before and after training. Pre-/post measurement with a controlled group method tackles the deficiencies of the first two methods by comparing the trainees to a control group—another group of workers with the same level of skills who did not go through the training (Youssef, 2012).
