Readings to Prepare for a Class Session
Before attending class, students are expected to complete the readings for that session. Readings:
Paul J.
... [Show More] Feldstein, Health Policy Issues: an Economic Perspective, 7th edition. Available at the Cornell
Bookstore. (Required text). Two copies are on reserve at Mann Library.
Vivian S. Lee, The Long Fix: Solving America’s Health Care Crisis with Strategies That Work for
Everyone, 2020.
Other assigned readings are posted on the course’s Canvas web site in the Readings folder.
The 6th edition of the Feldstein text, which may be less expensive, is generally a pretty close substitute for
the 7th edition. If you do decide to use the 6th edition, my suggestion is to read the following chapters
from the 7th edition, which is on reserve at Mann Library: Chapter 1 and Chapter 38. All other chapters in
the 6th edition should be fine. Two copies of the Feldstein text and two copies of the Lee text are on
reserve at Mann Library.
Lecture Slides and Lecture Videos
PowerPoint slides for each lecture will be posted on the Canvas web site the morning of each class in the
relevant folder for each class session.

Prelim and final exams: the exams will be a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and (mostly) short
answer questions. Prelims and finals from 2019 and 2020 are posted on Canvas in the Exams folder if
you would like to see sample questions. Although each exam will focus on material covered since the
prior exam (i.e., they are not cumulative), you will need to understand major concepts on all three exams.
Exams must be taken when scheduled and can only be made up with an excused absent pursuant to
University rules.
Assignments: each student will be responsible for completing 3 short assignments. Detailed information
about each assignment will be posted on Canvas in the Assignments folder. You should upload your
assignments to Canvas. The assignments are due on the following dates:
- Assignment #1: Examining the Performance of the Two Largest Private Health Insurers in the
U.S. is due at the beginning of class on September 21st. [Worth 5% of your final grade].
- Assignment #2: Insurance Plans on the ACA Exchanges is due at the beginning of class on
October 19th. [Worth 5% of your final grade].
- Assignment #3: Price and Quality Transparency is due by midnight on November 23rd. [Worth
6% of your final grade].
