why is it not a good idea to do this in this scenario:
You are writing a report on patients who were given radiopharmaceutical
medications. You need to create a filter that looks for medications that are
radiopharmaceuticals. Your first instinct might be to write a filter similar to this:
where MEDICATION_ID in (/.../)
1. you would have trouble identifying all medications that qualify as a
radiopharmaceutical. Once you did identify all these medications, you may find it
to be a somewhat large number.
2. if any new radiopharmaceuticals
were added to your system in the next med load, you would need to add that
medication to your report.
What are two ways to report on medications:
ERX groupers
VCG groupers
What is the difference between ERX groupers and VCG groupers
The first, ERX groupers, allow Willow analysts to attach any number of 'tags' to each medication record (for example, 'Radiopharmaceutical'
or 'Chemotherapy medication').
The second, VCG groupers, are lists of records that can provide consistent reporting definitions across an organization.

How are vcg groupers different from erx groupers?
VCG groupers in Epic are often used for consistent reporting definitions. Unlike
the ERX groupers, VCG groupers are in their own master file. VCG groupers can
group records of any master file; however in this class you'll only look at how
they're used with medications.

packages
Packages are represented by an __________-
NDC - National Drug Code
The NDC specifies ____________
the product
the size of the package
type of package

t/f: there can be one ERX record for Meperidine HCL 10 MG/ML INJ, but there can be multiple NDCs for it
true, consider the following
size of package
type of package
manufacturer
In Chronicles, information about each package is stored in ______________, along
with the __________________.
an NDC record
corresponding NDC
t/f: Most medications (ERX records) are associated with one or more NDC record.
true
t/f: an ERX record not to have an NDC record associated with it at all.
this is possible: For example, ERX records for mixture medications will not have an NDC record associated with them. Instead, each component
medication of the mixture will have an associated NDC record.
While it is possible for multiple NDC records to be attached to ________________, a ____________ will only ever point to one ____________ at any point in time.
a single ERX record
single NDC record
ERX record
t/f: multiple NDC records can be attached to a single ERX record
true--one medication, multiple packaging, etc.
t/f: a single NDC record will only ever point to one ERX record at any point in time.
true--one type of packaging per medication
t/f: mixtures will NOT have NDC records
true--each component medication of the mixture will instead, have the associated NDC record.
The ___________ table contains package information, codes, and implied unit information for National Drug Code records. Each row in this table represents one NDC record.

how to keep track of NDC codes getting recycled over time?
new contact is added to the NDC record
description of contacts in RX_NDC_STATUS
During a medication load, changes that Medi-Span or FDB has made to
NDC and drug associations are loaded in the system. Changes to NDC are
kept track of in contacts.
Previously, the NDC 67544-072-65 was assigned to the medication
CALCIUM CARBONATE ANTACID 650 MG PO TABS. However, in
June of 2008, that medication was taken off the market. In June of 2010,
the NDC 67544-072-65 was then recycled and assigned to the drug
CALCIUM CARBONATE ANTACID 648 MG PO TABS.
In the NDC master file, there is one record that stores information about
NDC 67544-072-65. The first contact stores the drug that it used to be
associated with. The second contact stores the drug that it is currently
associated with.
The RX_NDC_STATUS table contains two rows for this NDC record -
one row for each contact.
what is one instance where ndc codes are recycled
medication taken off the market
for meds taken off the market, NDC codes get recycled and re-assigned. How does this look in the NDC master file?
in the NDC master file, there is one record that stores information on the original ndc code. The first contact stores the old drug information, new or second contact stores the current drug info.
There would thus be two rows in rx_ndc_status, one row for each contact.
each row in the rx_ndc_status table is one ___________
contact
within the rx_ndc_status table, to make sure you match the ndc to the right erx, filter on_____________ or filter on __________________

what are some columns in the rx_ndc_status table?
**ndc_id
**contact_date_real

what happens when a new NDC contact is created manually?
If a new NDC contact is created
manually, however, the system will not automatically inactivate the old contact.
As such the best strategy is to use a subquery or common table expression such as
above.
common table expression
For reporting on NDCs prior to a certain date, a common table expression could come in handy. For example, to find the NDC codes associated with each ERX on January 1st, 2010, you could use a query like this:
with contacts as (
select NDC_ID,max(CONTACT_DATE_REAL) cdr
from RX_NDC_STATUS
where CONTACT_DATE <= '1/1/2010'
group by NDC_ID
)
select cm.MEDICATION_ID,ndc.NDC_CODE
from CLARITY_MEDICATION cm
inner join RX_NDC_STATUS rns
on cm.MEDICATION_ID = rns.MEDICATION_ID
inner join contacts
on rns.NDC_ID = contacts.NDC_ID
and rns.CONTACT_DATE_REAL = contacts.cdr
inner join RX_NDC ndc
on rns.NDC_ID = ndc.NDC_ID [Show Less]
