Week 10: Final Project
Analysis of quality improvement program
Patient safety in healthcare systems such as operating rooms, intensive care units,
emergency rooms or trauma rooms are dependent on effective team workers that provide
safe patient care to all the patients (Manser, 2008). The five components that support the
improvement of patient’s wellbeing are: transparent care, care integration, persistent
commitment, importance to work, and restorative training reform (Leape, 2009). Due to
several patient errors, government tends to implement certain standards to patient safety
culture. However, there are many challenges in the way of implementing the standards.
Studies show that preventable errors cause more than 90,000 deaths (Bryant et al, 2012).
The development of safety culture needs open communication between the healthcare
works from all levels, patient’s feedback, reporting errors and education opportunities
available for all the employees.
A study at John Hopkins Medicine facility indicates that medical errors are the
third leading cause of death in United States followed by heart disease and cancer (Allen,
2016). The biggest hurdle solving this problem is creating public awareness about the
existing problem and how it can easily be prevented. For example: if you ask most people
about the most common cause of death, the common answer would be list of nonpreventable causes like heart attack, cancer, car accident etc. (Allen, 2016). The safety
awareness will help public to question the hospitals about the care they are getting from
the hospital. It also helps gain the attention of the researchers to investigate the errors
occurring more frequently and figure out a solution to such errors. Also if there were
more data available on medical errors, government would be able to clearly see the
intensity of the problem and therefore provide resources to solve the problem accordingly [Show Less]
