Week 6 Area of Interest Power Point Presentation From Expert Recently 2023
1. INTRODUCTION:
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an evidence-based
... [Show More] approach to clinical decision-making,
defined as the integration of the best available scientific evidence in nursing practice. Evidencebased practice (EBP) is a key concept that addresses how to identify, adopt, implement and
evaluate interventions based on evidence published in high-quality research journals. As future
advanced practice nurses, we are encouraged to do what we can to ensure our clinical decisions
are based on the best available evidence. We have a responsibility to our patients and ourselves
to ensure that we use this knowledge and make the right decisions for our patients.
This presentation will go over the following topics:
What exactly is evidence-based practice (EBP)?
What is its significance in nursing practice?
A conceptual model that could be used to develop and implement an EBP

Slide 2; EVIDENCE-BASED DATA AND PRACTICES
Evidence-based practice is intended to test a procedure, practice, or theory through empirical
research. Evidence-based practice is commonly implemented in healthcare settings and
education to ensure that interventions are based on sound research (Stevens, 2017).
Why must we be involved in evidence-based projects?
Improve patient outcomes
Improve professional development in clinical trials
Access to relevant clinical information
Clinical research collaboration
Improve the quality of health care
Catch the most likely treatment effect to be found in the research
Provide opportunities for a second opinion that can change diagnosis and treatment plan
in an effective way
Provide a hedge against failures or bad results during future clinical research studies
SLIDE 3; EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE MODEL
The evidence-based practice model is a systematic method for applying research findings to the
real world. It involves integrating clinical expertise and patient values with the best available
external evidence from systematic reviews, including randomized controlled trials, metaanalyses, and other forms of rigorous research (Kumah et al., 2019). The evidence-based practice
relies on up-to-date information about comparative benefits and harms to decide on appropriate
interventions for individual patients.
ACE STAR Star model of Evidence-Based Practice
The ACE STAR is an evidence-based practice model developed in Canada to improve
knowledge translation and address the implementation challenges of researchers, clinicians,
policymakers, and consumers (McNett et al., 2021).
It consists of a series of steps designed to build towards a final product, namely an evidenceinformed decision or guidelines.
Two main research perspectives are taken into account in the design of the ACE STAR:
The first one is the systematic review. A systematic review involves a detailed search of all
relevant studies, performed in a predefined way that accomplishes three tasks.
The second is the patient perspective. It is important to establish how patients see their condition
and want to be treated for it, even if it involves treatment options that are not proven by scientific
evidence. This is particularly important in chronic diseases or will have a long-lasting impact on
their quality of life. People with these conditions usually need to make many decisions over time.
Slide 4: ACE STAR Star model of Evidence-Based Practice (cont'd)
The Star Model gives a focal point for EBP projects, and it is an important part of a quality
assurance framework. The Star Model was designed mainly to measure and support nursing
interventions, but it can also be applied in other disciplines (Steven2017).
The model consists of six components that provide the information necessary for determining the
effects of nursing care on patient outcomes: Intervention, Environment, Obstacles, Patientspecific factors (PSF), Timing or Sequence of events, and Standards. The model has been used
successfully in many different health care settings. However, in the real world of healthcare, it is
not obvious how to apply the Star Model. There are different ways for nurses to arrive at the
same conclusion. A problem has been that this has led to confusion about what nursing
interventions do and do not matter.
Slide 5: AREA OF INTEREST
Depression and Suicide
Mental health and depression are some of the most prevalent issues in our society, but they can
become deadly with a lack of funding and early intervention. Suicide is one of the most common
yet preventable causes of death worldwide. To reduce suicides, finding people at risk for suicide
and providing them with treatment are very important. Not only does diagnosis help to prevent
future deaths, but it also provides an alternative to suicide. As stated above, depression can
cause suicidal thoughts, and thoughts of suicide are a predictor of suicidal behavior. While men
and women feel equally vulnerable, research shows that African Americans' suicide rates are two
times higher than the national average. Suicide is most common among middle-aged men and
women with a previous history of suicide (ATrain Education, n.d.). Tackling these problems
before they escalate will help all members of our society to have better lives (Zaror et al., 2019).
Depression is a commonly diagnosed mental disorder that can significantly affect the
quality of life, and even it could lead to suicide. There are many cases where people with
depression and suicidal thoughts do not seek help and do not get diagnosed in time. Early
diagnosis is crucial because it allows for proper treatment and significant improvement.
Suicide is characterized by a person who intentionally ends their own life because of
extreme depression or any other mental disorder that leaves the person feeling hopeless.
Factors such as low income, poor housing conditions, social isolation, low levels of
education, stress, and substance abuse can contribute to mental health problems, leading
to depression. Suicide occurs most among economically disadvantaged and with low
educational attainment.
Primary care practitioners are now uniquely positioned to identify and potentially
intervene with at-risk individuals.
Recognizing and addressing suicide could reduce rather than exacerbate existing suicidal
thoughts.
The assessment must be tailored and carried out to be respectful of the patient's cultural
identity and religion.
Recommendation for practice change
Early assessment for health-related concerns (i.e., depression in teenagers; suicide prevention for
the elderly. Such would involve the following:
1. Continual monitoring of the patient's general state of health, alertness, and mood
2. Monitoring all medications prescribed to the patient; and
3. Recording any advice given by a consultant or other health professional (e.g., psychologist).
In addition to health-related concerns, assessment for areas of specific vulnerability is required
for all elderly people.
Such vulnerability areas would include:
Planning the elderly person's access and egress from a building
The risk of falls and the dangers presented in the home environment (e.g., slippery floors,
loose rugs, overhanging decorations)
The hazards presented by prescription drugs (particularly those with anticholinergic
activity)
The hazards presented by alcohol (e.g., the effects of alcohol on the elderly, the elderly
with diseases such as dementia, etc.).
(Ayalon et al., 2021).
Additionally, Any feelings of anxiety or depression must be noted and treated at once. In
addition to treating the elderly person's health concerns, mental health issues should be
considered. Such issues may arise as a result of dementia (e.g., difficulty in meeting daily needs;
poor communication skills; loss of self-awareness), substance abuse (for example, alcohol;
sedative medication; drugs), and age-related changes in the brain (such as memory difficulties,
loss of concentration). If these issues occur, immediate intervention is required to prevent any
increase in neuropsychological impairment or other diseases (Ayalon et al., 2021). Sooner or
later, each elderly person will need assistance with their daily activities.
Slide 6; STATISTICS ON SUICIDE FROM MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA 2020
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Among individuals 15 to
24, suicide is the second leading cause of death.
From 2020, suicide rates were two times higher in males than females. More than 90% of
suicide victims die using a firearm, usually a handgun (Necka, 2020).
The male-female suicide ratios, relatively stable from 1997 through 2007, increased
sharply from 2007 to 2009 and have remained elevated since then [Show Less]
