● In response to the
death of protesters
from May 3rd,
workers gathered in
Chicago's Haymarket
Square to protest.
● Workers were
protesting in support
of an 8 hour
workday.
● The protest began as
peaceful and quiet.
However, someone in
the crowd threw a
bomb. And the event
became deadly.
● Several officers and
demonstrators died, and many
were injured.
● 8 men were convicted and 4 of
them were executed for the May
4th events.
● "The union’s membership
dropped to barely 100,000 by the
end of 1886.
Nonetheless, during its brief
success, the Knights of Labor
established the potential of
creating a union that welcomed
workers from all trades."
