Ethylene Plant Design Basis
In order to get the teams started on the design project, the client provides the following
information. It is not by all means complete. It is the intent of the client to leave the
project as open-ended as possible so that the teams can research and develop their own
information and data. As the teams learn more about the process, they may discover that
there are missing data or specifications. The teams are encouraged to communicate with
the client through their project managers to ask for more data or clarifications.

Product Distribution
Table (2) provides initial estimates of product distributions from the reactors (thermal
cracking furnaces). These estimates are used to establish preliminary mass balances for
the plant so that each section can start modeling its part of the process concurringly.
The product distribution from ethane/propane cracking has to be determined by a kinetic
study. PRO/II has a feature called in-line Fortran which allows you to input rate equations
into its reactor model. The same modeling technique will be used for the acetylene
reactor. It is easier to use PRO/II to design a reactor than using MATLAB or
POLYMATH, because PRO/II supplies all relevant thermo and physical properties. After
Section (1) completes its kinetic study of the cracking [Show Less]
