COMMUNITY CARE PLAN 2
Community Care Plan: Sabana Grande De Boya, Dominican Republic
Data Analysis Summary
An island nation that is part of the Greater Antilles archipelago, the Dominican Republic
is located between the Caribbean regions and the North Atlantic Ocean (Medical Ministry
International, n.d.). Bordered by Haiti on the east it is mostly mountains with fertile valleys.
Throughout the island are bateys or clusters of shacks hidden within those areas that house
predominately Haitian refugees and impoverished Dominican nationals. With temperatures
ranging in the 90’s with humidity 70% or higher, these people groups are often seen with typical
tropical diseases including scabies and parasitic infections. Other diseases that are commonly
seen are gastrointestinal illnesses, bacterial infections, asthma, and heart disease (Northwest
Pediatric Center, 2018).
One of the bateys that is an area of highest need is Sabana Grande De Boya. Once a work
camp harvesting sugar cane, clean water, electricity, and health resources are lacking. It is
predominantly populated with elderly, unemployed individuals and children. There are very few
young adults to help with the ones who remain (Pirela & Silvestre, 2013). Though there are two
hospitals in the region, transportation is lacking and since most individuals do not have health
insurance, they do not seek medical care. This community is at high risk for health disparities
due to lack of access to care, poor dietary choices, lack of understanding of vaccination
schedules, and contaminated drinking water.
Parasitic Infections related to contaminated drinking water poses a great risk to both the
children and adults of this community (Northwest Pediatric Center, 2018). Dehydration related to
parasitic infections, high humidity and temperatures and lack of access to clean water
exacerbates other health issues. The weather conditions which cause many issues with water loss [Show Less]
