Summary
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic drug compound produced by about fungi species, with the genus Psilocybe being one of the leading producers. Psilocybin is most useful to the human body because of its ability to be easily convertible to psilocin, which alters the mind the same way LSD, Mescaline, and DMT affect it. Some of the most typical effects on humans are euphoria, alterations in perceptions, attitudes, and a loss of the ability to perceive time. Besides, some people have argued that they felt spiritual experiences after consuming psilocybin. Currently, there is an ongoing study to establish if psilocybin can be used to deal with depression, trauma, and anxiety, among other mental conditions.
In the spiritual realm, psilocybin continues to be used as a tool for invoking the names of the various deities, as some people believe that there is a god within the plant’s products. Therefore, for some communities, psilocybin is used in a similar way sacraments are used among the Catholics with the communities’ members believing that it provides an avenue to communicate with the deities. Moreover, in other studies, some communities’ members claimed that the plants created an avenue to people’s understanding of their self-awareness and developing a strong sense of contact with the deities (De Veen, 2017, p210). On the other hand, some studies have shown that psilocybin, just like many other psychedelic drugs, induces a state of consciousness that may have a strong bearing on individuals’ meanings and spiritual significance. While this may be true, there is a need to conduct a scientific evidence-based study to establish if this spiritual connection with the plant can be of any medical or medicinal value. [Show Less]
