Prepare a diagnostic test for a class of students you are about to take over. You should specify the age
and the suspected level of students. Briefly

limits imposed, if none state the expected duration.
The Practice is the most essential element in language learning. While presentation, revision and testing are often
confined to teacher-class interaction, practice should involve different modes. This is mainly on the grounds of
learning efficiency, but also for variety. Students spend perhaps up to 90% of their time practicing English, and if the
focus of attention is always on the teacher, lessons become just too monotonous. Students may be practicing a
structure or function but some different aspects of the situation may be presented. Teachers often present new
vocabulary at this practice stage. A certain amount of new vocabulary can be absorbed with little formal
presentation from the teacher, especially if the new vocabulary is in a known area and is well contextualized. The
teacher merely extends a lexical set with further items, of names of colours, say, or furniture. By little formal
presentation, we mean a quick drawing or flash of a picture, or explanation, or translation. Before considering what
to test, or how, we should be sure why we are testing. These are the usual reasons:
• to find out if students have learned what we tried to teach (a test of learning or progress)
• to find out what students do or do not know, or can or cannot do (diagnostic testing)
• to find out if students have achieved a certain level of knowledge or ability (a test of attainment)
In the first, the content of the test will be dictated by the work that has been covered. The second type of test
will dictate some of the work to be done in the future. The diagnosis is the process of identifying and clarifying the
roots of the problems by comparing goals with facts. In this step, it is useful to search for predicaments.
Predicaments are situations in which goals do not fit with known facts. When I evaluate the actual performance of
an organization, business unit or individual, you may identify over- or underachievement (relative to established
goals). Of course, single-problem situations are rare. Accordingly, you should recognize that the case situations you
study probably will be complex in nature. Effective diagnosis requires you to determine the problems affecting
longer-term performance and those requiring immediate handling.
The Diagnostic English test refers to a test that helps the teacher and learners identify the problems they have
with the English language. It is generally administered at the beginning of the year or semester; the scores obtained
from the students help the teachers identify syllabus content that will be covered throughout the year or semester
and will be administered for the University English Program in the English language department of the
University. The students who qualify to take the DET are ages 18 and above. But all of the candidates have previous
exposure to English language. The test has two main sections-the first measures the use of grammar and vocabulary, the
