Description: China is increasingly a global player in international development, geopolitics, and soft power
influence. This course will explore the history of Global China and its contemporary geographical reach in
Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Touching upon topics including the South China
Sea conflict, infrastructure development occurring under China’s Silk Road inspired Belt and Road Initiative,
and the geopolitics of Chinese digital technology, the course explores how China is reorienting global
geographies. It asks: What about Chinese development is new? Does it pose a positive alternative to Westernled developmentalism? Why is China’s rise so controversial?

15% Book Review of a “Global China” book
You will provide a critical review of a book in light of course insights. I will provide a list of books
mid-way through the semester. You can also keep your eyes open for books you are interested in.
There are more and more books coming out every week! A portion of this assignment will be
related to giving critical feedback of your peers’ book review.
25% Podcasting
Over the course of this assignment, you will create two podcasts with your classmates. The goal of
the podcasts is to create 1) an engaging aural storytelling project that highlights course themes and 2)
engages with knowledges on our campus community to interrogate what people might think about a
topic and why. Five groups will be made and, starting Week 3, groups will work towards creating
two podcasts. The first podcast will also be a skills-building exercise worth a pass/fail 10% (of your
total grade), and the second podcast will be graded by rubric and count as 15% (of your total grade).
15% Course attendance and participation. Up to two absences will be excused.
Half of these points will be related to attendance and the other half to regular engaged participation
respectful to everyone in the classroom. Participation grade may also include other small required
