Culture Project Research Paper: Native Americans
While all minority groups often face discrimination Indigenous/Native American people are
often discriminated against on a different level. Throughout the years there have been many
different cases involving the legal system and the rights/power of Indigenous people. For
example, in 1823 in Johnson v. McIntosh it was argued that only the federal government has the
right to “negotiate for American Indian land,” (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2013.)
According to Oyez in this case Native American land was bought by a Johnson man and after he
passed it was bought by McIntosh from congress. Johnson heirs sued since it was supposed to be
left to them, but since the government ruled that the Piankeshaw tribe did not have power like
that over the land when it was originally bought by Johnson, so the titles were invalid. This alone
shows how the Native Americans were not viewed as equals and that it was essentially never
their land to sell. The tribe living on this land lost their home as well as their dignity since the
government made it seem as if they were no one.
Economic factors also play into this since they might not have the resources, they need to
keep their land and affects the health care people receive and are offered. Native
American/Indigenous people have faced lower wages, fewer job opportunities, and more hostile
encounters with law enforcement for years on end (Pan American Health Organization, 2017).
This has taken a toll on them economically, emotionally, and mentally. It can cause PTSD,
discourage them for trying for promotions or new jobs and can cause them to participate in
unlawful activities to show their anger. Along with discrimination they face cultural
appropriation on a regular basis with people using their traditional and sacred clothing for [Show Less]
