advocated very different positions, with less emphasis on
carbohydrates (plant-based foods) and greater emphasis on protein
and fat (animal foods).

i. Both physicians are trying to figure out how to eat their
way to better health. Dr. Ornish feels that eating less fat
and more colorful veggies (to receive a wide range of
vitamins) is the way to go. He also places a greater focus
on a person's mental condition and attitude toward food.
Dr. Lustig, on the other hand, argues that while carbs and
lipids are healthful, sugar consumption should be limited.
He advises that weight loss should come first, and that
sugar may be the major cause of obesity in the United
States.
d. Explain the scientific basis of each author's position.
i. Dr. Lustig investigates Ornish and Atkins diets, comparing
them to others and examining their overall success rates
in order to discover their usefulness and how they work.
He then used this information to arrive at his own
conclusions. Dr. Ornish carried out research to
demonstrate the link between food and heart disease. He
discovered that individuals who were put on a mostly
plant-based diet with low fat and moderate carbs were
less likely to deteriorate, and some even improved.
