QUESTION 1
What contribution do you think hermeneutics as a philosophy of education can make to your
classroom practice? Provide reasons and examples for your answer. Consult chapter 5 of
your prescribed textbook.
Hermeneutics is the art and methodology of interpretation of ideas and understanding the
validity of the ideas. Hermeneutics help to know the knowledge a student has prior to the
lesson. This helps in the dialogue about a subject matter.
According to Kearney ( 1996:1 ) , hermeneutics the intentional action or approach of
analysing and interpretation to uncover the underlying meanings behind written work
which contemporary readers use other than traditional methods of interpretation . Higgs
and Smith ( 2017:64 ) , postulates that excellence in the science field does not mean a life
of fulfilment for human beings and argues that an innate need for communality and
belonging results in a life of happiness .
As a teacher I would strive to create a learning environment governed by inclusiveness and
teach the learners about the power of landing a helping hand to one another , the learners
will be taught to share the knowledge and educational resources with one another . This
will enable the gifted learners not to leave leaners with learning difficulties behind ,
embodying the idea of togetherness and ensuring that each learner feels they belong .
The Philosophy of Hermeneutics in education can be applied in classroom to help the
teacher to easily help the learners understand complex subjects in the classroom. For
example, the teacher may lead a discussion with learners concerning a topic and tries to
speculate through their knowledge prior to the discussion. Afterwards, the teacher
concludes with more comprehensive findings to justify the knowledge gained by the
students. He can clarify some points which the students had differences. Therefore, the
philosophy of Hermeneutics when applied in classroom helps the teachers pass
information easily and effectively, hence, the learners capture the whole content of a topic.
If we apply Hermencutics as our philosophy of education, we shall not accept the view that
there is ‘one right answer’ to a problem. We shall also tend to focus on the artistic part of
the curriculum rather than on a curriculum that emphasises the hard sciences.
