GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
Introduction to Clinical Medicine II (ICM II) is a course designed to introduce the students to the practice of
medicine. The knowledge gained in the Basic Science program will be integrated within the “art” of
medicine. Students will sharpen their skills in history taking and physical diagnosis and learn about clinical
reasoning and how to formulate differential diagnoses and appropriate treatment plans. In addition,
students will become comfortable with SOAP note writing and oral presentations. Patient and interprofessional communication and professionalism will be stressed throughout the course.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 10-week Winter 2021 ICM II course will be offered as either a 5x5
remote/onsite Hybrid program or a fully remote program. For the first five weeks of either program, the
learning experience will take place remotely and include live online Organ System Case-Based Learning (CBL)
sessions with associated on-line self-study didactic lectures and live online Small Group (SG)/iHuman Patient
(iHP) sessions with faculty. The iHP platform utilizes animated patient avatars to simulate a complete patient
encounter. During the last five weeks of the ICM II course, students will experience either onsite or live
online Standardized Patient Encounters (SPE) and Clinical Skills Lab (CSL) sessions, depending on whether
students are learning remotely or on campus. In addition, students will be responsible for reviewing Clinical
Therapeutic online lecture modules and completing associated quizzes. Clinical Therapeutics lectures include
Ethics, EKG, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics, Addiction Medicine, Ophthalmology, Behavioral
Sciences, Pre-Natal Genetics, Vaccines & Travel Medicine, and Palliative Care. Those students who are on
campus during the last five weeks will also work in Medical Provider offices with actual patients. Those
students who chose to learn remotely will be asked to do the two-week Clinical Prep Course (CPC) at the
start of clinical rotations. During this CPC, students will practice and show competency in physical
examination and common laboratory procedures.
The Organ systems covered during the semester include the following: Respiratory, Cardiology/Peripheral
Vascular, Gastrointestinal/Liver, Neurology, Musculoskeletal/Rheumatology, Endocrinology,
Renal/Reproduction, and Hematology/Oncology.
The goal of ICM II is to prepare students to enter clinical rotations with a skill set that allows them to interact
with patients comfortably and confidently. Students will be prepared to practice evidence-based medicine
and achieve the six core competencies as outlined by the ACGME. Preparation for Step 1 of the USMLE will
also be important during the course. In the second half of the semester the Kaplan Review course will cap
this preparation. [Show Less]
