CNS/PNS 10 Point Activity Instructions:
Using your Human Anatomy & Physiology (Amerman, 2nd Edition) lecture text and the content available on Mastering
... [Show More] A&P, the companion
website that goes with your lecture text. Answer the following questions from Chapter 12: Central Nervous System and Chapter 13: The
Peripheral Nervous System. Turn in completed assignment through

Chapter 12: Central Nervous System
Module 12.1: Overview of the Central Nervous System
Module 12.1 in your text introduces you to the structural and functional features of the brain and the spinal cord
and looks at the process of nervous system development. By the end of the module, you should be able to do the
following:
1. Describe the structure and function of each major area of the brain.
2. Describe the five developmental regions of the brain, and identify the major areas of the adult brain that
arise from each region.
Build Your Own Glossary
Following is a table listing key terms from Module 12.1. Before you read the module, use the glossary at the
back of your book or look through the module to define the following terms.
Key Terms for Module 12.1
Term Definition
Brain The organ of the central nervous system the performs multiple integrative functions.
Cerebrum The two large, superior structures of the brain that are responsible for higher mental
functions, control of movement, and interpretation of sensations.
Diencephalon The central core of the brain; made up of the thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, and
subthalamus.
Cerebellum The posteroinferior portion of the brain; responsible for regulating ongoing movement and
the correction of motor error.
Brainstem The most inferior part of the brain; responsible for automatic’ subconscious functions.
Spinal cord The organ of the central nervous system that connects the brain with the peripheral
nervous system and preforms certain integrative functions.
