Course Description:
This beginning level medical/surgical nursing course integrates the components of theory, clinical and simulation that focus on evidence-based patient centered nursing care of medical-surgical adult patients with chronic illness and needs within acute care and community-based settings. Emphasis will be placed on assessment of risk factors affecting patients' health and wellness. Students will implement the nursing process and integrate Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs concepts to assess, analyze and prioritize the needs of the adult with chronic illness. Pharmacological principles specific to chronically ill patients will be discussed. The course builds upon concepts introduced in N265, N266, N275. Professional Standards, patient advocacy, spiritual-cultural diversity, legal/ethical issues and effective communication and collaboration with members of the healthcare team will be discussed.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
As an East Los Angeles College Nursing Professor, I am committed to creating a diverse community that is inclusive, responsive, and supportive of all its faculty, students, and staff.
I will ensure diversity is respected in its many forms. These include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, diversity, and place of origin.
I recognize that we live in an increasingly interconnected world and that students benefit from learning in educational and social contexts in which there are people from all backgrounds. The goal is to encourage students to appreciate diverse experiences and perspectives throughout their lives. All members of the college community share a responsibility for creating, maintaining, and developing a learning environment in which differences are valued, equity is sought, and inclusiveness is practiced.
Attendance
It is expected that students regularly and punctually attend all class and clinical sessions.
Regular and timely attendance in the classroom and clinical area is necessary for students to meet the stated objectives of each course and the BRN regulations. Additionally, regular
attendance demonstrates professional behavior and responsibility.
If absence does occur, each student is responsible, not only for the content missed, but also for
any announcements which might have been made. A student who is absent/tardy risks being unable to demonstrate satisfactory performance in the rotation/course and this may lead to a failing grade.
Attendance at 100% of the total hours of the course is required to meet BRN requirements (The length of rotations varies depending on the course). If the time missed is more than 10% of the total number of hours in a given rotation or course, the student will be required to repeat the course.
Students who must repeat a course will not be allowed to progress with the cohort. [Show Less]
