Research on any topic can be challenging. Finding an up to date research article with a higher
hierarchy
... [Show More] evidence-based can add even more challenges. That is if you do not know where to look.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the putting together best research evidence with clinical expertise with
patient values and needs in the delivery of quality, cost-effective healthcare (Grove, Grey, & Sutherland,
2017). Searching an EBP can be frustrating and great at the same time because it is constantly evolving.
While working on my EBP search, I found a plethora of articles related to my chosen topic but does not
necessarily related to my PICO question. The publication dates; ranged anywhere from many years ago
to the present time, for example, It is considered that up-to-date EBP is found in publications that are
within five years of the date the research is performed (Grove, Grey, & Sutherland, 2017).
According to (Brown, 2018), using evidenced-based practice with the guidelines of systemic or
literature reviews is a good place to start your research. In my search, I started within my comfort level
with a google search as well as the use of Google scholastic search to thoroughly compare both to see
what information I will be able to find on fall prevention. This took me anywhere from 60-90 minutes but
provided me with more generalized information on my topic as well as gave me other catchphrases I
could use to continue into the Walden library search engines. I then used the nursing database, EBSCO
and CINAHL Plus with full-text and peer reviews to help me locate my related articles. I also worked my
way into finding ways to navigate the database to find literature that can support my week one PICO
question. Before my search, I did not think it will be difficulty finding related literature that interests me
as well as support my research question. I will say that I did struggle to put together the right
combination keywords and phrases together, but with trial and consistency, I made some grounds. The
phase Patient fall alone resulted in about 2,274 articles, and many were not related to my main PICO
question. I Narrowed my search down further by adding some identifier such as specialties, study or
safety, EBP, intervention, prevention, etc. Later I realized that some of the phrases used were too broad,
so I had to rephrase my question several times including the type of patient outcomes to expect and
what type of fall prevention program is in place to prevent patient fall. I also used nih.gov to further
research and research my topic question.
Some of the keywords and expander I used helped me to narrow down my results. Finding the
highest level of evidence was difficult, so I had to move down the pyramid to find the most substantial
evidence literature. I feel as though some of m [Show Less]
