ABCDE
▪ A – Airway/Cervical Spine
o Most important step – no patent airway ⟶ hypoxia ⟶ brain injury/death within 3-5 min
o Head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver to open airway if pt is unresponsive – DO NOT perform if pt has a protentional cervical spine injury
o Inspect for broken teeth, blood and secretions – do finger sweep
o Open airway can be maintained with adjuncts (oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal)
▪ Bag valve mask with 100% O2 until advanced airway established
▪ Nonrebreather with 100% O2 for pts spontaneously breathing
▪ B – Breathing
o Assess for presence and effectiveness of breathing
▪ Auscultate breath sounds, chest expansion, rate and depth of respirations, any chest trauma? tracheal position, JVD
▪ C – Circulation
o Assess BP, HR, peripheral pulses and cap refill
o CPR
o Assess for external bleeding ⟶ control bleeding
o Obtain IV access using large bore catheters into antecubital fossa of both arms ( unless obvious injury)
o Infuse isotonic fluids (LR, NS and/or blood products)
o Shock can develop if circulation is compromised
▪ Shock is the bodies response to inadequate tissue perfusion and oxygenation.
• 𝖳HR and hypotension – can result in tissue ischemia and necrosis
• Interventions to alleviate shock
o Admin O2
o Apply pressure to bleeding and elevate lower extremities
o Admin IV fluids and blood products
o Monitor VS
o Remain with client and provide reassurance and anxiety support

o A – alert
o V – Responsive to voice
