All your CSUF SON courses are based on Adult Learning Theory principles. Adult learning in a
classroom setting and in an on-line environment can prove challenging for some students.
Unlike a traditional college classroom model where the teacher lectures and the students listen,
an adult learning environment focuses on independence, self-direction, and cooperative
learning in groups where the student is an active rather than passive participant. The role of the
‘instructor’, also significantly different, is that of a facilitator who ‘guides’ rather than ‘directs’ the
learning process. Personal accountability and responsibility for one’s own learning, and selfmotivation are fundamental and essential attributes of the successful ‘Adult Learner’.
Another challenge student’s face is the required workload for university level courses.
You should be prepared to spend approximately 3 hours, per week, per each unit course to
successfully meet the course requirements. Therefore, a 3-unit course will require 9 hours per
week of work outside of class. Students should carefully evaluate how many classes they can
successfully manage in addition to their other responsibilities.

Social Media Guidelines and Policy:
The CSUF School of Nursing (SON) Social Media Network Guidelines and Policy provides
guidelines for the use of social networking by nursing students. Prior to engaging in social
network communication, students must remind themselves that they represent the university,
school of nursing, and nursing profession. In online social networks, the lines between public and
private, personal and professional maybe potentially blurred. When you identify yourself as a
student of the CSUF School of Nursing, you are creating perceptions about the SON and your
