NUR699 Week 1 Discussion Question 2
How would a nurse practitioner and a nurse manager differ with regard to how they use and incorporate EBP in their
... [Show More] areas of practice?
Solution 1
Evidence-base practice (EBP) can be used across the nursing continuum. EBP requires a mixture of the best research evidence from high quality studies in health related areas. Evidence-based practice is “the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values” (Polit & Beck, 2012, p. 25). However, nurse managers (NMs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) may incorporate EBP differently in his or her daily practices. EBP is important for the nursing profession, which is why NMs and NPs understanding and the implementation of EBP are imperative for the sustainability of the profession of nursing.
Nursing leadership like NMs can use EBP to influence clinicians’ organizational attitudes, behavior, and culture. Denoted by Northouse (2016) “people have power when they have the ability to affect others’ beliefs, attitudes, and courses of action” (p. 10). Managers of nurses should assess their staff willingness to use EBP daily in order to provide the highest quality of care. Moreover, NPs can incorporate EBP in his or her daily practice by using this ideology to assist in the decision making process. A basic feature of EBP is that it serves as a clinical problem-solving strategy, and it decreases the importance of decisions based on custom, authority, and routines. Additionally, EBP is used to make clinical judgment calls and use as a cost-effective resource to render care to patients across the lifespan. NMs and NPs uses of EBP to either influence their own behaviors or the behaviors of others in clinical or managerial practices.
In conclusion, EBP should be implemented into nurses’ daily practice. NMs and NPs use EBP to achieve care that is effective, safe, and efficient. This is why it is imperative that nurses across the continuum continue to add EBP to the nursing body of knowledge to advance the profession as a whole.
