Pre-Class Assignment: Week 7
Task
Predicting and managing potential complications
Discuss the relationship between metabolic syndrome and the development of diabetes
mellitus.
Metabolic syndrome is a fast-growing obesity related health concerns. metabolic risk factors
increase the individual’s chance of developing cardiac disease, stroke, and diabetes mellitus.
The health problems that exist are obesity, hypertension, abnormal lipid levels, and high blood
glucose. underlying risk factor is insulin resistance due to excess visceral fat.
Diabetes is a chronic multisystem disease that is characterized by hyperglycemia related to
abnormal insulin production, impaired insulin utilization or both. patients that have diabetes are
typically show signs and symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
Both lead to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke

Task
Discuss how the nurse can compassionately care for patients who are obese and need
to change their lifestyle. How can the nurse support and empower the person to be
successful?
I would first do a physical assessment to see if there are underlying issue causing the
patient to be obese. I would need to know the patient’s willingness to and what could be
changed. If the issue is related to diet I would show the patient better ways of
developing food plans, give her hand outs of healthy choices and ways to adjust to
better choices. I would should the patient by being supporting and encouraging the
patient. I would praise them for effort and continue to encourage good measures. I
would also ask for a list of what the patient likes to eat and try to show them other things
that could take the place of unhealthy items.

Glucose Regulation Nutrition
Consider the above graphic. These concepts have been presented and applied in
previous courses. Review the chapters in Giddens for each concept.
Using your Giddens' textbook, explain how these two concepts are interrelated. Provide
rationales for your answer.
Glucose is the primary method of energy source for the human body. Regulation can be
obtained by balancing PO intake, glucose intake and hormonal signaling. Nutrition plays part of
glucose regulation, eating a balanced diet and and exercise can affect normal glucose
metabolism. Lack/poor nutritional intake can cause a decrease in glucose resulting in
hypoglycemia, a life threatening issues.
