The choice of an instrument is essential for obtaining appropriate and trustworthy data regarding a research topic. In relation to the topic of if behavioral therapy is as effective in the treatment of ADHD as Methylphenidate (stimulant) therapy the instrument of choice would be a numerical rating scale. A rating scale is a research instrument that requires the observer to assign numbers to each trait (Gray, Grove, Sutherland, & Burns, 2017). Scales not only help make the initial diagnosis of ADHD but can also help track progress and management. The scale that will be utilized in this research plan will be the Early Childhood Attention Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scale (ECADDES).
The ECADDES home and school versions help provide documentation of ADHD characteristics in the home and school settings in children ages 2-6 (Kholi, n.d.). Most ADHD scales are a built for older children with symptoms, therefore, this scale will be utilized because it is designed to evaluate the target age for this study. This scale is unique in that is allows both teachers and parents to rate participants behaviors and ADHD symptoms on a numerical scale. The scale will be utilized as part of the initial diagnosis of ADHD and upon completion of the research teachers and parents will repeat the questionnaire. This will allow comparison of each child’s questionnaire prior to starting either behavioral therapy or Methylphenidate therapy and answer whether or not a reduction in symptoms was noted in relation to treatment administered.
Validity of an instrument refers to the extent in which the instrument utilized in a design appropriately reflect or measures the question being examined (Gray, Grove, Sutherland, & Burns, 2017). The validity procedures conducted to ensure accuracy are highly complex and typically take years to conduct. For example, the validity of the research design mentioned abou
