Course Description This clinical practicum provides the learner with the opportunity to develop
clinical competence in psychiatric and mental health clinical settings.
Emphasis is placed on the development and maintenance of the
therapeutic relationship with clients/patients and families across the
continuum of care.
Course Objectives

1. Develop communication skills that facilitate accurate problem identification and
development of a therapeutic relationship with clients/patients and families.

2. Implement interventions that promote optimal level of functioning in the least
restrictive environment for individuals with mental illness. (MSN Essentials
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9)
3. Demonstrate knowledge and skill in determining realistic collaborative goals
and outcomes for individuals with mental illness. (MSN Essentials 1,2,4,7,9)
4. Demonstrate effective clinical decision-making regarding the use of non-
pharmacological and pharmacological interventions as part of the overall plan
of care. (MSN Essentials 1,4,9)
5. Use mental health promotion and disease prevention strategies in the delivery
of care to patients and their families. (MSN Essentials 1,3,4,7,8,9)
6. Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary team in providing continuity
of care for clients/patients and families. (MSN Essentials 2,7,9)
7. Participate in identification of system-related issues that affect the delivery of
mental health care across the continuum of care. (MSN Essentials 2,3,7)
8. Identify the potential impact of socio-cultural, political, and interpersonal factors
on the development of the therapeutic relationship, and the dynamics within

Prerequisites Successful completion of all clinical and didactic courses through Term 2.
