Exploring the rate of seasonal-pattern depression in an Inuit community
Methodology: Descriptive qualitative. Descriptive research design is appropriate here. The reason for
choosing such a method is that the researcher will need to look into records of patients, conduct
interviews and even make observations. Descriptive research design is the best for it describes fully the
data gotten regarding seasonal-pattern depression
Democracy in America
Methodology: Explanatory research design. Research design: Mixed research design. Rationale: The
method can be used in analyzing the data received from the qualitative and quantitative research
methods. It also complements the strengths of a single design as well as overcoming the weaknesses of a
single method.
The relationship between compassion fatigue and burnout among critical care nurses
Methodology: Correlational/ regression analysis. Research design: Diagnostic research design. Rationale:
The correlational method shows the relationship between the two variables. The diagnostic research
design focuses on providing the root cause of the problem and provides a suitable solution.
Two drugs for Alzheimer’s show promise
Qualitative research method is used. The appropriate research design used is descriptive research
design. The rationale behind this is that the researcher needs to describe the two drugs fully for the
audience to understand
Evaluating technology with student success
Methodology: Quasi experimental. Research design: Experimental research design. Rationale: Quasiexperimental method compares the students who succeeds and those who do not, with their access to
technology. The experimental research design shows the difference in results of the two groups of
students.
Factors that influence weight control among women
Method: quantitative research method. Research design: Diagnostic research design. Rationale:
Quantitative method provides figures to be used in analysis. The diagnostic research design focuses on
providing the root cause of the problem and provides a suitable solution.
The meaning of living with brain injury and stroke10 years after the injury
Method: Descriptive method. Research design: Explanatory research design. Rationale: Descriptive
method describes the situation as it is. Explanatory research design explains how possible it is to live
with brain injury and stroke10 years after the injury.
Exploring the beliefs of healing among Aborigines
Methodology: Descriptive research method. Research design: Descriptive research design. Rationale: The
descriptive method will describe the beliefs of healing in Aborigines and the design will further tell what
those people believe.

Gender and Poverty in South Africa in the era of HIV/AIDS

Charlene Phillpotts-Brown posted Apr 22, 2018 9:48 AM Subscribe
The purpose of the article was to identify gender inequality, age, sex, HIV status, socioeconomic
characteristics with a focus on heads and non-heads of households, as the driver of HIV/AIDS epidemic in
South Africa. The purpose statement, although it was not stated in the abstract or in the beginning
paragraphs, it is clear and detailed as to why such a study was being conducted, and there is no
ambiguity evident. The authors all had either Masters or doctorate degrees in science indicating that
their titles and accolades proved beyond a doubt that they are more than qualified to conduct a research
study of this magnitude. This is reassuring to the reader, who may need to use this research and
translate it into practice depending on the evidence and outcome of the study. The writing style itself is
very repetitive which makes it an easy read but does not allow the reader to appreciate the efforts put
into this research project. The title of the study clearly spells out the purpose of the study and is
unambiguous.
The research question and hypothesis were not mentioned, but can be clearly identified in the
research article. They hypothesized that the age, sex, HIV status, education, source of income, access to
sufficient clean water, food and other resources contributed to the people contracting the disease. The
ethical considerations were identified since there was the use of blood samples, there was a bar code
system that was anonymously linked with the samples. The Ethics Committee of the HSRC and
thoroughly trained to obtain informed consent while keeping the information confidential and showing
respect for the participants, which is reassuring to know especially from an ethical standpoint. The
sampling strategy used randomization to select candidates for participation in the study. A list of
randomly selected numbers were obtained using a multistage stratified sampling, however, only some of
the data proved to be statistically significant. One of the downfalls in this study was that in my opinion,
they used way more females than males and this could have caused a bias in the results, although the
females proved to have contracted HIV in more instances than males due to gender and poverty.
However, because of how the candidates were selected to participate it seems that there was no strict
adherence as far as inclusion and exclusion criteria were concerned, therefore presenting a possible
interference with the validity of the study and proving to be affected by the extraneous variables.

Identify and describe the research problems, purpose, objectives, and hypothesis of the research.
Evaluate the credibility and validity of the study
The research problem in this study was that younger women who tend to be the head of the households
are infected with HIV. These younger women are often times poor and live in poverty with no cash. The
purpose of the study was to find the correlation of those infected with HIV and the relationship of their
socioeconomic status as well as the gender to better understand the HIV epidemic in South Africa. The
objective of this study was to interview a large amount of women and men while focusing their topic of
questions on age, financial status, gender, socioeconomic status, HIV status, and whether or not they
were head of their household. The hypothesis of this study was that the direct correlation between
gender and age with the HIV infection rates. The results at the end of the study concluded that there was
in fact a direct correlation of head of household women in poverty that were infected with HIV. The
validity/credibility of the study is of great importance. The study was conducted by themselves as they
gathered all of the data. The study has been peer reviewed and has good qualitative/quantitative data.
The data does not however show a correspondence between the risk of HIV with a persons poverty
status. More data should be collected along with education to this area to help decrease or eliminate
this epidemic happening is South Africa.

WK2 Discussion Question 2 NSG3029
Research Problem: Inhabitants of the Arctic communities may be more prone to Seasonal affective
disorder (SAD) due to the increasing winter darkness and latitude.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to help health care providers understand what environmental
conditions may cause depression amongst the residents of the Artic community in order to provide
tailored care to improve their health.
Objective: To determine the rate of seasonal-pattern depression in the Inuit community above 70
degrees north. (Haggerty, Cernovsky, Husni, Minor, Kermeen & Mersky, 2002).
Hypothesis: It is believed that at extremes in climate, latitude above 70 degrees N and geographical
isolation, the effects of the seasons would be comparable to other studies at high latitudes. (Haggerty,
Cernovsky, Husni, Minor, Kermeen & Mersky, 2002).
Credibility and Validity: This study has demonstrated that is credible and valid. It has reviewed and
sighted multiple studies which were previously conducted under similar circumstances and they were
able to reproduce the same or similar results. They used a two phase method to determine the
screening survey cutoff using a HAD-D score of nine or more and the Structured Interview for DSM-III-R
(SCID). They had a ninety percent participation rate of all subjects approached giving them a pool of 111
subjects between the ages of 14-77. Subjects were also given the choice of a preferred language for the
survey either Inuit or English. Their study included a case-finding method utilizing an instrument that
differed from other studies and some researchers argued that this was a limitation to their study.
However the researchers did extensive literature reviews to make comparisons to their own study and to
offer a more definitive methodology. In conclusion their study concluded that the frequency of SAD was
less prevalent if they considered existing presence of clinical depression in their test group and it was
more prevalent in the elderly. [Show Less]
