Week 1 – New Practice Approaches
In the first week of this course, I spent a
... [Show More] lot of time reading the requirements and familiarizing myself with what will be expected of me. I think it will be important for me to take each assignment a step at a time in order to not become overwhelmed while balancing work, school, and my family. It is becoming clearer on how important evidence-based practice (EBP) is in nursing and the medical field. I had gained a basic understanding of what EBP is during courses in this program. During this week, I still acquainted myself with the concept of EBP and how these ideas would be applicable in my own nursing studies. From the lessons that I gathered from previous studies and the lecture notes, it is clear that EBP is a resourceful tool used not only for the purpose of research, but also is utilizable in finding new methods as well as technologies (Ellis, 2016; LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2013). Moreover, EBP offers important facts and empirical evidence to support potential changes in the field of nursing, and which can be used in teaching new useful methods as well as techniques that have the potential to being remarkable contributions to the profession (Stevens, 2013). Ultimately, this resource offers excellent research as well as clinical guidelines that are necessary towards the nursing practice.
In week one, the Individual Success Plan helped to layout and plan for the course, clearly breaking it down and reducing some anxiety. I also spoke with my mentor, who works for the same employer, shared similar work beliefs and ethics as I do, and is a great role model of mine. She has the work experience and knowledge that I feel will assist me throughout this course. We discussed the course requirements and the importance of continual communication. She has also reassured me that she is available whenever I need anything or have a question.
Week 2 – Population Health Concerns
In week two, I feel like I am having a better understanding of the assignment requirements and expectations for the course. I had my pre conference with my mentor and professor to discuss my evidence-based change topic. I went back and forth with something that I was passionate about verse something that had infection control content. I originally wanted to research infection control in a locked facility, but I decided that I want to research the causes of suicide among teens. I want to find out potential clinical generated evidence-based programs and screenings that can be implemented to reduce suicide among teens. Becoming more acclimated, I also made use of the campus library to access peer-reviewed journal articles as secondary sources and support for my EB change. Upon data collection, I was able to organize the information and prepare a plan for the conceptualized EB change.
During my hours of research this week, my mentor and I found that there is a large teen population that is admitted in our emergency room at Woodland Memorial, as well as all of the emergency rooms in the Greater Sacramento Area. There is an increase in successful suicide attempts within the 10-19 year old teenage population. Using the library I have begun researching possible programs and screenings that can assist with preventing and decreasing the number of successful suicides, suicide attempts and possible admissions to a behavioral health hospital.
