... [Show More] Organization, 62% of adults are overweight or obese. This epidemic has not spared children since 20% to 25% are affected by overweight or obesity. The consequences of obesity include the risk for Asthma, Type 2 Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, heart disease, musculoskeletal disorders and low self-esteem. In addition, children who are overweight have a higher risk of being overweight or obese as adults (WHO, 2016). This statement holds true for many patients, including Mr. C.
He presented to an outpatient center seeking Bariatric surgery for his obesity. Mr. C. indicated that he was always overweight, even as a child and experienced a more recent weight gain of 100 lbs. over 2 years. He has a known history of sleep apnea and hypertension.
Currently Mr C. attempts to regulate his blood pressure by restricting his sodium intake. Despite this, he reports swollen ankles and feet, shortness of breath with activity and generalized itching over the last six months. The objective data presented indicates that Mr. C. is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 297 lbs., with a BMI of 46.5 and 3 + pitting edema of the ankles and feet. Vital Signs reveal a HR 88, RR 26 and BP 172/98. The lab studies showed a fasting glucose of 146, total cholesterol 250 Triglycerides 312, HDL 30, Bun 32 and Creatinine 1.8.
In this case study we will analyze Mr. C’s medical data and determine the precursors to the diseases that are caused by obesity. Being that Mr. C. is only 32 years old, lifestyle modifications such as increasing activity, improving nutritional intake and losing weight will improve his overall health. Mr. C’s elevated fasting blood glucose is an indicator that he may be a borderline Type 2 Diabetic. Further studies such as HgbA1c, repeat fasting glucose and a GTT might provide a more accurate diagnosis of Diabetes. Mr. C. has high blood pressure that is not [Show Less]
