Cognitive-behavioral therapy evaluates
... [Show More] how an individual’s emotions, thoughts, and
feeling direct their actions. CBT breaks down the thoughts and feelings involve by reaching the
core of the problem, as some of these symptoms are only a manifestation of a deeper selfcharacterization. It is a physiological intervention that can be a short-term used for individuals,
families, and specific groups to enhance modifications in social aspects of life through
mindfulness of their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. CBT has become an effective treatment
for various mental health disorders and is considered the first-line treatment for depression, and
anxiety.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy use in group settings can bring about positive changes in
the patients as communication in the group encourage social behaviors and skills
(PsychExamReview, 2019). Also, in a group setting, individuals are encouraged and motivated to
share their reflections, and this general knowledge can improve how they relate to their mental
health wellbeing. Lastly, the stigma attached to mental health disorders has dramatically affected
the number of people willing to seek treatment. The use of group therapy can breach the barriers
and reduce the stigma as they can see others suffering from the same disorder seeking treatment
as well.
Group and family therapy, compared to individual therapy, is different as patients have a
one-on-one encounter with the therapist. This environment can formulate different extents of
trust and willingness to share more. Also, the patient works with the clinician alone to identify
specific problem-solving skills directed toward the client they are working with. Research by
Melero et al. (2021) noted that individual cognitive behavioral therapy was more effective in
managing anxiety and depression in adolescents as they can freely express themselves after
building trust with the clinician. [Show Less]
