Analyzing Group Techniques
Group therapy can improve patient’s emotions including fears and anxieties by way of
supportive environment with peers and a therapist to facilitate healing. Group therapy provides
benefits such as learning with peers by using therapeutic techniques and methods to assist
patients to learn alternative methods to reduce symptoms such as depression, sadness, and
anxiety. The video referenced in this paper is psychotherapy for schizophrenia The purpose of
this paper is to review therapies that are beneficial.
The group techniques utilized in the video include cognitive behavioral therapy. The
facilitators used the techniques well, asking patients to express their anxieties and how they
overcame the anxiety the were feeling. According to evidence, cognitive behavioral therapy has
substantial influence by reducing necessary inpatient hospitalization and increasing patient
contentment (Carr et al., 2018).
According to research it is well-known that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is
beneficial by promoting individuals to improve their understanding and management of their
mental health (Lecomte et al., 2018). The group facilitators did well by introducing themselves,
reviewing the group agenda for the meeting, group rules, and follow up phone calls (Gerber,
2013).
One thing I would do differently, is space the clients more into a circle and slightly
farther apart. Patient’s often will become overstimulated, and sitting so close could become
bothersome, it was an odd arrangement, not a closed circle. I am not sure if spacing was an issue,
although, a small circle would be more engaging. An insight I have learned form the video
included the review of the agenda, rules, and following up. I have been facilitating inpatient
groups, and I am very nervous. I have improved on finding topics to discuss. The video helped

me to understand a better approach on validating and praising patient responses. I often will
review discuss a topic and ask open ended to the questions to the group, so anyone can answer.
This often works, but at times not everyone participates or some patients will monopolize the
conversation and other do not share. I gained insight on different ways to review a topic and ask
patients individually throughout the group, so everyone has an opportunity to share [Show Less]
