NR447 Week 3 Discussion Question, Conflict and Collaboration
At times the needs of our families conflict with our work responsibilities. Could this

1. Explain the conflict resolution skills displayed by the leader in the scenario. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate those of the leader.
2. How might earlier collaboration have been beneficial?
3. Some organizations utilize non Registered Nurses in the Case Manager role. What additional skills, knowledge and attributes would the BSN- prepared Registered Nurse bring to case management in this scenario?
Professor and classmates,
In this particular scenario I would grade the leader 8/10. I believe that this conflict could been avoided with proper communication, and participation of the team before the changes were implemented. In this particular conflict the husbands’ nurse has a legitimate concern about his wife’s safety. I don’t know if this would have been a problem for her if she was not married, but in this scenario such conflicts could effect our responsibilities. It is very important that leaders recognize certain conflicts that potentially overlap with work responsibilities. In this particular conflict, the physical safety of this nurse is on the line, to the point that if no resolution was achieved, she would have quit her job. Upon such circumstances the leader has to two options, one is to have to find someone else for the job that this nurse is more than qualified for, or come up with some intervention that would allow this nurse to perform her work activities where she would feel safe. Based on the lesson this week, we learned that to be successful, care teams must have collaboration, coordination of care, communication, and proper conflict resolution, and can not have one without the other (CCN, 2017).
Collaboration without coordination, communication, and conflict resolution could not be achieve, and so for. It is why this is such an important core competency to effectively deliver interdisciplinary and interprofessional healthcare teams. I believe the leader did display great leadership by taking into consideration the employees concerns, and allowed for open communication channels. Active listening allowed the leader to understand the employees concerns, and of her families. Before she had to hire someone else, she valued the nurses skills and knowledge in her area, by creating a valuable option for resolution for her nurse.
Early collaboration would have been beneficial as the leader nurse could have taken into consideration the personal feelings and safety of co-workers prior to the changes. This conflict could have been on the discussion table before it became an actual problem. Brainstorming as a team about possible problems, and assignment changes, could have created an environment of communication leading to coordination, to effective team collaboration. Our lesson this week put great emphasis on one’s personal feelings on a
particular issues, and the assessments of the needs of the patients or team to effectively provide high-quality care (CCN, 2017).
In my experience nurses are the link between the multiple interdisciplinary teams with the patient. We communicate messages from doctors, surgeons, respiratory therapist, radiologist, social workers, and others to and from the patient. Our role as a patient advocate, and the time spent with patients, allows nurses to understand their patients the best. In contrast to non Registered Nurses as Case Managers, the BSN-prepared Registered Nurses bring more dedicated skills to the patient, and the case management role.
The BSN program goes beyond just clinical skills, but also develops interdisciplinary skills important for the management of patients such as; evidence based practices, communication, collaboration, problem solving, team building. All these help nurses to achieve energy and deliver outstanding patient care (Finkelman, 2016 p. 298).
There are five different styles of managing conflict, but only collaboration is really considered as problem solving. I believe that this leader used the style of accommodating. After listening to the nurse that she will have to quit if she is required to perform her responsibilities in a dangerous location, the leader created an accommodation for her. If she uses such style often it could be detrimental to her leadership (Explore the 5 Styles of Conflict Management & Resolution in Nursing, 2011).
