Hello Professor and Class,
Informatics is the use of technology within healthcare to maintain patient records, assist clinicians, improve quality care, and more. The advantages of applying information technology in all aspects of nursing, including clinical areas, management, education, and research are increasing patient safety and it's leading to an evidence-based nursing, improve patient care, and improve efficiency and performance through information systems and new technologies (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014).
I perceived my competency level lower than I expected prior to taking the self-assessment since I do not use computers much outside of work and school. I did not really learn about computers until I went to college the first time. After the assessment, I realized that I interact much more with technology than I was aware of. Mainly through my work and work programming because I have been trained and know the program very well after working with the same system for 5 years now. I feel overall that I am not where I want to be in my competency with technology because most of what I have learned outside of work has been self-taught.
The competencies of nursing informatics include computer skills which include searching and retrieving patient data, informatics knowledge which recognizes the importance of nursing data for improving patient care, and informatics skills which interprets the data in the organization (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014). I work at a small hospital in the ER, and my current role uses all these competencies, but I use computer skills the most frequent. We use the computer for the electronic medication record, accessing patients prior visit information, charting assessment, vitals, and all other documentation of the patient.
Some resources that I can use to develop my competencies are to use resources such as online videos or help links within the systems or programs that are being used. I have often used these in the past to understand how to navigate specific programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Whenever I come across something unfamiliar to me, I use the mentioned resources or often ask friends or coworkers to share with me their knowledge. Often times, though, I have [Show Less]
