Title of Presentation: Preparing Your Patient for Surgery
Target Audience: All staff nurses new to the facility, a 250 bed rural hospital, responsible for preparing patients for Surgery. This is their first introduction at this facility in preparing patients for surgery.
Program Description: This is a two hour lecture on preparing patients for surgery. This is part of a 32 hour lecture series orienting new employees to the facility.

At the end of the class, the student will be able identify correct methods to prepare their patient for surgery.

At the end of the class, the student will be able to distinguish physician’s orders for surgical consent and risks, benefits, and alternatives. Demonstrate how to find physician’s order for surgical consent and risks, benefits, and alternatives in Meditech Meditech computer software in test mode Hands on computer training with an instructor is a preferred method of learning (Lindsay, Oelshlegel & Earl, 2017) Open patient chart and look for physician orders for surgical consent and risks, benefits, and alternatives Prepare PowerPoint slides with screenshots of physician’s orders for surgical consent and risks, benefits, and alternatives Return demonstration

At the end of the class, the student will be able to identify anesthesia report and orders to prepare the patient for surgery. Demonstrate how to find anesthesia’s order and report.

Return demonstration
At the end of the class, the student will be able to interpret anesthesia orders correctly before sending the patient for surgery. Demonstrate how to open anesthesia orders to determine what preoperative medications the patient should have.
Demonstrate how to find order for NPO status for dietary. PowerPoint presentation/Lecture PowerPoint facilitates learning and provides better retention of information presented (Wanner, 2015)

At the end of the course, the student will show/send the patient’s family to the correct waiting area to wait for information regarding the patient’s surgical updates and physician post surgical visit. Explain the importance of helping the patient’s family to find the correct surgical waiting area so that surgical updates and physician post surgical report can be given PowerPoint presentation/Lecture PowerPoint facilitates learning and provides better retention of information presented (Wanner, 2015)
