In one of the reading assignments this week you reviewed advance nurse practitioner (APN) roles and the application of project management concepts, one of the major elements of NI, but new to most nurses. Does this have an application to your practice? Why or why not?
Answer
Healthcare organizations develop projects with the aim to improve patient care and patient comes. Stanley, Malone, and Shields (2016) explains that projects are short-lived ventures that are developed with an exclusive product, service, or result, and are generally used as a way of dealing with things that aren’t able to be dealt with at the normal operating boundaries of organizations. Advanced practice nurses need to have an understanding of the concepts of project development and managing because our goal is to deliver the best care possible and work on ways to bring forth impments to do so. To take part in the management portion Sipes (2016) states we need to be comfortable with the process of coordinating and directing teams in order to meet the formal, defined, and approved goals and objectives that have been laid out for each individual project.
Projects have to have team collaboration especially in the inpatient hospital setting. I believe that if employees are engaged and believe in the mission of their organization they will be eager to take part in projects no matter the size of their contribution, and they will view this as a part of their role and duties. The organization I work for is striving for magnet status, they are constantly looking for way to achieve this with different project and campaigns. They are currently looking for way to encourage nurses to become certified in their area of expertise. They are offering monetary incentives and recognition throughout the hospital. We also have other programs like clinical ladder programs that allow nurses not only to get a pay increase and opportunity to participate in projects to earn points to achieve the clinical ladder. Much of the information and data collected to back the development of said projects comes from that stored in the IT realm.
I feel that in my future career as a nurse practitioner I will utilize project management concepts as means to help improve my practice. As a nurse practitioner, even though it is a new role, I will see myself in the leadership role, and as a part of this I will take an active role in the development, coordination, and directing of a team to improve the care delivered by myself and other healthcare professionals.
