Concept Analysis
Introduction:
Concepts display knowledge that can be backed up by scientific knowledge or theoretical framework. To capture clarity
... [Show More] on a concept, it’s imperative to dissect the research and area of practice. In relation to the theoretical application to the nursing profession, one must identify concepts that rely on practice. By examining using Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis proposes a solution to a practical problem (Bergdahl & Bertero, 2016). Research validates rational decision making to alleviate patient deterioration. Concept analysis is a useful tool to distinguish between defining attributes of a concept and its relevant structure (Rodgers et al., 2018). Ultimately, concept analysis promotes mutual understanding and accurately reflects its theoretical base.
The concept analysis that I will emphasize is Self-Care. This particular concept of self- care has rapidly shifted and evolved throughout the years. On the basis of this concept analysis, the theory of self-care was developed in 1958 by Dorothea Orem. Orem’s theory emphasized overcoming human limitations and gaining independence. The necessity to develop and subsequently perform self-care duties is central as a healthcare professional and patient. Self-care is an integral part of the healthcare setting. This concept provides an opportunity for health promotion and disease prevention. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze: the concept of self-care defining attributes, identifying antecedent consequence, theoretical applications of the concept, illustrative model case, and reflection as an advanced practitioner nurse (APN).
Definition of Self-care
Self-care is defined by self-initiated behavior that individuals incorporate to fight disease and promote health (Mills, et al., 2018). Self-care contributes to physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Utilizing coping skills in the context of burnout and stress is a helpful way to promote self-care. If self-care is not practiced, burnout takes a profound toll where a cascade of events occurs. To ensure the desired goal is met, it's significant to measures one’s capability of self-care practice. For example, self-care is typically used in clinical settings with various chronic medical conditions to educate, emphasize, and motivate both patients and their families (Chipu & Downing, 2020). To promote personal health, a proactive and holistic approach should be utilized. Through self-care individuals must have a healthy relationship with themselves.
Participating in self-care activity is similar to charging a battery. In this day and age of multitasking, without taking breaks we are constantly depleting our energy. As a future APN, becoming a self-care proponent is highly imperative to ensure patients are receiving high-quality care.
Defining attributes
Attributes refer to identifying particular characteristics. The literature examined identified some of the defining features of self-care as self-control, human capability, and education (Chipu & Downing, 2020). Self-control is grasped by having discipline to achieve and perform specific health goals. Promoting independence and enabling patients to take action, is key to ensure criteria is met. Human capability for self-care requires an action directed toward the therapeutic regimen. Self-care involves the capabilities of performing activities benefiting physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Lastly, to grasp this concept of overcoming the deficit and accomplishing the task, one must be familiar with the knowledge. Education plays a vital role in disease management and essential to patients and family members comprehend to ensure
no learning curve is present. To preserve health and wellbeing, motivational support is a key component to achieving goals. Interacting and collaborating with family members ensures support, as well as patient satisfaction.
Antecedent and Consequence
The antecedent is the necessary skill to occur before the given concept, to make it necessary (Bergdahl & Bertero, 2016). Grasping on to self-motivation, commitment, professional support, and active participation promote positive health outcomes (Chipu & Downing, 2020).
To identify individual needs, one must assess themselves in a holistic approach. Being mindful and encouraging oneself to adapt to a healthy lifestyle starts with a positive environment and a healthy mindset. Doing things that increase your self-esteem boosts one's confidence. To ensure goals are met, cognitive-developmental level, physical, psychosocial play a vital role in the change of behavior. The consequences are the manifestation of the self-care tasks. For example, grasping the skills gives patients the ability to reach autonomy, increased self-esteem, and ability to cope with stress (Chipu & Downing, 2020). Mitigating these changes improve the quality of life.
Model Case
Mr. Singh, self-employed business owner aged 62 who is a South Asian man diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus. His body mass index is approximately 31 and his weight is 193Ibs. His fasting blood glucose level is less than 5.6%. He is prescribed Metformin, antihypertensive, and statins to maintain glucose and cholesterol levels. Mr. Singh's blood pressure has been increasing for quite some time due to lifestyle and diet factors. To maintain stable blood pressure,
patients should monitor it every morning. Mr. Singh mentioned he enjoys ordering take out while at work which causes him to not feel the greatest after consumption. [Show Less]
